Definition
An indwelling urinary catheter is a tube with a bulb at the end that is placed in the urinary bladder for the purpose of draining urine, This is attached to a drainage bag.
Cause
Indwelling catheters can be used following surgery, urinary retention, neurogenic bladder and help keep an individual dry in the treatment and healing of decubitus ulcers.

Drainage bags should emptied daily and whenever necessary. Record the output and color of the urine.
A decrease in urinary output, dark in color or red tinged ,odor or if the individual has a temperature the doctor should be called.
As a caregiver it is important to use clean technique to prevent urinary infection.
During each day the individual should drink at least 8 glasses of water or juice. This helps in keeping the urinary tract clean.
If the individual is able to ambulate independently a leg bag can be used to improve their quality of life.
Accepting the catheter as part of daily routine is important for the well being of the individual.
Keeping the urinary meatus [where the catheter leaves the urinary bladder] clean is important to prevent infection. This can be done by washing with soap and water.
If the individual is bed bound make sure the drainage tubing is not bent and the drainage bag is lower than the mattress.
The doctor will let you know how often the catheter should be changed. At that time he will refer you to a Home Health Agency.
